Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art from her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse, who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay had an aunt who was socially aware and showed her how to make use of the arts as a way of expressing herself. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was in her the college. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to monitor and investigate the residence of an individual Jury member. The duties she was required to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in small production studios right out of school. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Apart from PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful. She is an actress most well-known for American Experience (1987) and A More Perfect Union (2009). Autumn was the Rose of A More Perfect Union and Anna Payne of American Experience.
